Mid-July Status Update: Reconfiguration of The Story of Two, PAX West Out of Consideration

As the state of affairs with Zero Break Games enters its next phase, the time has come for what will be a series of periodic updates on the status of various parts of the development of projects with regard for the Zero Break Games label, in addition to other matters which may affect the progression of both those projects and Zero Break Games as a whole.

First, there's the matter of the delay in The Story of Two, for which I have an update. In my previous announcement, it was determined that this game will require a change in approach for its development with regard to changes in what's accepted by Xbox in the context of game submissions relative to the use of HTML-based game content. The good news is that I have been in contact with parties who develop the recommended replacement libraries for this and have begun the migration process using a test build of their code libraries, with verification of the specifics to be completed in advance of a Friday deadline for the verification process. Furthermore, and should the provision be successful, it will open up the game to a multiple platform release and I will begin the process of adding PlayStation to the list of launch targets.

Second, although preparations in regard to the necessary personal matters have begun and have passed their first week of implementation without incident, I have not been afforded a definitive amount of time by which such progress would be advanced in terms of the requirements and will instead have to decide by measurement of progress with what has already been arranged. Combined with today's announcement by the PAX West team that weekend passes are almost sold out and will likely all be gone within a short time following this update, I will not have the opportunity to scout games at this event like I had been planning for and will have to defer to PAX East 2025 before I have another chance to do so. Therefore, it is with a heavy heart that I must abandon all hope of utilizing PAX West 2024 for any activity related to Zero Break Games and readjust my schedule for the remainder of the year.

And finally, I have determined that all but a very short list of characters and concepts from Advent Heroes will migrate to the replacement project and have determined that working my design plan around the JRPG specification will be the easiest means of doing so as it is the design structure for which I have the most experience at this time. Complete design details will be formulated in the coming weeks, but the base determinations are to create the game in a non-linear structure with skill progression based on game completion as opposed to battle experience in a way by which the order of progression will be used to help determine which battle skills attained in this structure will be the most beneficial against the next boss in the battle order. Adapting this style of game progression to the JRPG design specification has been in consideration as a potential replacement for what has been done before, and I have made the determination that it is something that I will in fact be attempting. The most logical ETA for the game cannot be determined immediately, but what I can say is that I will be keeping the Great Advent hook (and its heroes) in at least some capacity and have therefore code-named this effort as Advent Tail (in reference to the biologic structure of the mage character across both projects, who will be picking up a few more tricks beyond those that she had in the original design plan).

And with that, I am done with this round of updates. More information on these and other matters will be shared as they become available.
